• 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 | new car review

  • The power hungry shall never go hungry again say Chevy with the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine is SAE-rated at 580bhp and 754 Nm of torque making it the most potent production Camaro till date. Matching The ZL1’s zealous performance is an array of power train and chassis technologies, including Performance Traction Management and third-generation Magnetic Ride Control. The 2012 Camaro ZL1 belittles even the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1’s 427 cubic-inch big block by 150 horses while meeting today’s stringent emissions requirements.

Headlining the visual elements are the LED BMW-esque halo rings and encompassed within are high-intensity discharge headlamps. Besides that, the ZL1 receives a characteristic front fascia, front splitter, rear diffuser, rear spoiler and side rocker extensions.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1On the insides, available is a suede-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Customers for the ZL1 can choose between a 6-speed Tremec TR-6060 'MG9' manual or a Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic transmission with Drive, Sport and Manual shift algorithms. In 'Drive' mobility is optimized for fuel economy, including second-gear starts, while the shift feel is smoother. Several track-ready features have been borrowed from its cousin, the Corvette ZR1 for eg. the engine-oil cooler, the rear-differential cooler, the high-performance fuel system that counters the effects of g-force and the 3rd-generation Magnetic Ride Control (MRC).

The new dual-coil design is capable of faster responses, with damping levels now adjusted up to 1,000 times per second. There are three settings for MRC in the ZL1: Tour, Sport, and Track. PTM integrates MRC, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control, to enhance performance on the road, racetrack and drag strip. 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1The steering wheel takes as little as 2.5 turns lock-to-lock ensuring a quick city friendly maneuverability while stopping power is ensured via ventilated Brembo brakes, 6-piston and 4-piston calipers at the front and rear, respectively.

The 20' forged aluminium wheels wear Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar ZR-rated 285 tyres upfront and tarmac-clawing 305’s in the rear. Weight saving has also been given a thought as seen from the aluminum hood with carbon fiber inserts. Retro four-pack auxiliary gauges include boost readouts; there is also a Head-up display. Other conveniences include USB and Ipod connectivity that can are played via Boston Acoustics audio. Perhaps, the only true competitor to the ZL1 is Ford’s 550bhp Mustang GT 500. In any case with more power than a Gallardo LP-570 and more torque than Ferrari's 6.0 V12 599 GTB….Speed will never be the same again!
